By the end of their childhood 1 in 3 children in England will have been exposed to domestic abuse. (ONS, 2023, Fox et al., 2014, Oliver et al., 2019). That's 10 children in the average classroom.
Domestic abuse is often the key ingredient in a variety of harmful outcomes for children including significant physical and emotional harm, youth offending, bullying, substance and alcohol misuse and harmful sexual behaviours.
Educational and life outcomes are more likely to be worse for those exposed to domestic abuse in childhood. However, domestic abuse is often a hidden issue.
Domestic abuse is therefore likely to be the most common barrier to positive educational and life outcomes for children. However, naturally, there is much professional anxiety about working with domestic abuse. Professionals report feeling helpless, under confident and unskilled when working with children exposed to domestic abuse.
Having extensively researched the field and conducted her own research in this area. Victoria believes that professionals working with children and their educational settings do have the ability to effectively support those exposed to domestic abuse.
However, there is a lack of training for professionals and how to support the educational and wellbeing outcomes of children and young people exposed to domestic abuse.
